Thread Inserts - Helicoil

Product Overview

Helicoil thread inserts create load-bearing joints in metal materials with low shear strength. Helicoil thread inserts have been proven and used for over 65 years. They are available in free-running and screw-lock versions. Green or red color helps to simplify its identification when installed.

Thread Inserts also known as Wire Thread inserts, are manufactured of cold rolled 18-8 stainless steel that meets AS7245, MIL-I-8846, and DTD734 standards. This wire is cold rolled to a diamond cross section, yielding an ultimate tensile strength of about 1375-1725 MPa, a mirror-like surface finish of 2-4 Microns, and a flank hardness of RC 43-50, significantly beyond the typical tapping materials and best suited for most industrial applications.

Helicoil Inserts are also available in other materials such as SS-316, Inconel X-750, Titanium Alloys, Nimonic 90, Nitronic 60, Phosphorus Bronze, Beryllium Copper, and with special coating and plating requirements such as Cadmium plating, Silver plating, Zinc plating, Nickel plating, and dry film lubricants, as well as anti-corrosion and salt spray resistant coatings.

Method / Principle

Helicoil finds its application in thread reinforcement and repair. It is used in reinforcing the threads whenever low-strength materials (e.g., Aluminum-Magnesium alloys and fiber-reinforced plastics) are used.

Helicoil thread inserts produce high-strength, wear-resistant, and heat-resistant threads with the highest precision. The nut thread is wear-resistant, even if frequently used.

Applications

Helicoil is used widely in mechanical and electronic companies, automotive, aerospace industries, gear housings, exhaust systems, engines, lights, electrical appliances, hammer drills, and printing presses. Our thread inserts comply with various requirements and industry standards, including aerospace, power plants, and other industries.

Product benefits

Corrosion and temperature-resistant

Even when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, Helicoil threads exhibit stable and reliable performance. Depending on the application, the thread inserts are made of different materials.

Non-wearing

The premium surface quality of the rolled thread made from chrome-nickel steel ensures a high-strength and wear-resistant thread with a constant, extremely low thread friction torque.

Uniform load and stress distribution

The load gets distributed uniformly along the entire screw length. The elastic properties of the Helicoil thread insert allow uniform load and stress distribution.

Screw locking

Avoids self-loosening. Thanks to the thread technology and polygonal twist of the Helicoil Screw lock, that results in a high degree of frictional connection and ensures proper locking. Additional locking of the joint using split pins, wires, or washers is not necessary.

Dimensions

1. Helicoil Insertion tools

Helicoil Insert tools are manufactured using the best quality components with the help of advanced technology. These tools are available in several specifications as per the accurate needs of clients.

  • Durability
  • Robustness
  • Crack resistance

Helicoil Insertion Tools - sizes M1.6, M2 – M39, and UNC / UNF categories from 1-64 to 1-1/2" are offered. HeliCoil insertion tools are available in a range of configurations, including Insertion Tool with Threaded Mandrel Tools with a threaded nozzle on a threaded mandrel prewinder Depending on size and pitch, the tool is available in both captive and non-captive versions. Threaded nozzle on plain mandrel prewinder tools. On request, larger insertion tool sizes are also available. HeliCoilPrewinder tools are ideal for easy, fatigue-free insert installation in the production line, resulting in high-quality HeliCoil insert installation and preventing coil thread jumping. Screw locking inserts and free running inserts with a fine thread pitch require threaded mandrel prewinders to be installed successfully.

2. Helicoil Taps

Heli-Coil taps are used for general and machine operations. The standard STI tap can be used as a basic tool to create threads ideal for threaded inserts. It is recommended that these taps are used with a CNC machine or other high-precision equipment in order to ensure a proper class of fit.

HeliCoil Threading Taps are available in HSS as a conventional product and HSSE or HSS with High Cobalt Contents as specialties. In addition, specific wear-resistant coatings can be applied to the taps.

Standard HeliCoil taps are made of high-speed steel and are available in a variety of forms and styles to produce holes with tolerances of class 4H5H and 5H6H in the Metric series and class 2B/3B in the UNC/UNF series for use in a wide range of aluminums, magnesiums, mild steels, and alloy steels.

3. Helicoil Tang Break-Off & Extraction Tools

HeliCoil Inserts should have their driving tangs removed to avoid interfering with the assembled bolt's end. Tang Break-Off Tools can be used with inserts that are up to 18mm / 3/4" nominal diameter. Tang Break-Off Tools with Auto/Spring Loaded Tangs are offered for inserts up to 12mm / 1/2" nominal diameter.

Auto Tang Break-Off Tools are operated automatically, with a spring-loaded, easily activated punch striking a sharp, uniform blow on the tang of the mounted insert. M1.6, M2 – M2.2, 2.5 – 4.5mm, 3 – 8,. 5 – 10mm, 10 – 3/8", 11 – 24mm, 7/16" – 1", 27 – 39mm, 1-1/8" – 1-1/2" HeliCoil Insert removal tools are available for the following ranges: M1.6, M2 – M2.2, 2.5 – 4.5mm, 3 – 8,. 5 – 10mm, 10 – 3/8".
